What you should know about Burma

American companies can now begin investing in Burma, following the official lifting of U.S. investment sanctions against Burma on Wednesday. For the past 15 years, U.S. companies were prohibited to make investments in the country.

U.S. firms are still prohibited from business dealings with Burma's military and industries controlled by the Ministry of Defense. Also, trade imports are prohibited in a wide range of goods.

Observers said U.S. energy companies are now likely to show interest in Burma’s rich natural resources, especially oil and gas in offshore areas of the Andaman Sea. Many U.S. companies, including Coca Cola, have already announced an interest in setting up operations in Burma.

Kaduna state attack: 20 killed in Nigerian village

 Map of Dogo Dawa

Gunmen have killed at least 20 people in a dawn attack in a remote village prone to bandit attacks, in northern Nigeria's Kaduna State, reports say.
Residents of Dogo Dawa said the attackers stormed the village, shooting and stabbing anyone in sight.
Many of those targeted were worshippers leaving a mosque.
No group has yet admitted the attack. Some reports suggested it may have been linked to a running feud between villagers and bandits.

After attacking the Mosque-goers, the raiders moved to the house of a community chief and killed him too.
State Information Commissioner Saidu Adamu told the BBC a gang of robbers who have been terrorising the area are likely to have carried out the attack.

Phone app for the adulterer, makes lover’s texts disappear

How different life would be for Tiger Woods, Ashley Cole or Kristen Stewart – if they had only known about a new phone app which helps cheating lovers keep their affairs secret.
The Cate app, which stands for “Call and Text Eraser”, creates an invisible log of calls and text messages and can hide specific numbers from the contacts list.
The screen will never indicate who has called and at the touch of a button, all private information can be wiped from the phone forever.
Unlike other apps, the Cate icon does not appear on the home screen and if someone walks in while the cheat is reading their illicit texts, a simple shake of the phone will make it all disappear.

Salute to Matthew Faji

It is his spontaneous chuckle which always graduated into a warm smile I always remember of Matthew Faji. That I did not know that Matthew Faji had died and been buried is a sad indictment of how well the present generation of editors of national newspapers know those particularly photographers who have contributed so much to build and strengthen what is now called the new journalism in Nigeria. I agree with one of his many genuine admirers, Nkanu Egbe, that “Matthew Faji's death should have been front-page news. He was a national treasure in print journalism!”

It was a call to another great friend, 'younger brother and journalistic supporter' of Faji, Wole Olaoye, who was recuperating from an accident, that informed me that Faji had been buried. And it was indeed sad that Olaoye who had made me know Faji and his body of work much better broke the terrible news.

Kanye West and Kim K's relationship cooling off?

According to Page Six, Kanye is almost back on the market. Really?
From Page Six
Friends are wondering if things are cooling off between Kim Kardashian and her new beau, Kanye West, who appeared in her life just in time to take the attention away from her disastrous marriage and divorce with Kris Humphries.
While Kim is in Miami to film her family reality show, Kanye has been living it up at Paris fashion week, even though he isn’t showing his clothing line there. On Sunday he was at a party hosted by Diane von Furstenberg and Olivier Zahm to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Purple magazine.
Another source tells us that things between Kanye and Kim are “cooling off” because “he’s getting tired of the constant press and promotion. He’s not as tight with her as he was.”

US Embassy And Pregnant Women

us embassy.JPG

The United States’ embassy in Nigeria seems to have perfected the art of denying well-meaning and legitimate non-immigrant Nigerian mothers visa for reasons best known to it. At the end of visa interview sessions, what one hears is, ‘’You are not qualified at this time’’! Women of child-bearing age are asked questions such as: Are you pregnant at this time? How many children do you have? Do you plan to have more children? And if the response to any of these questions is in the affirmative, then the next set of questions may be: Do you plan to have the baby in America? Can you afford to pay the medical bills? You are probably asked to show evidence and even after showing evidence you are told mostly that you do not qualify at this time or that you should reapply after having your baby.
